About

Amira Hussein is a gender and development expert with over 20 years’ experience working with NGOs and CSOs in Egypt and the MENA region in the fields of GBV prevention and response, countering human trafficking, human rights, education, child protection, and gender equality. With a background in advanced research skills, Amira Hussein applies evidence-based practices in identifying the root causes of and community-led solutions to VAWG and gender inequality. Amira specialises in capacity building, community engagement, and organisational development. She led UNFPA Egypt’s localisation and first pilot of the Generation Dialogue approach with a focus on FGM elimination, and spearheaded participatory gender audits for multiple organisations as an ILO-certified participatory gender auditor.

As Regional Advocacy Coordinator for Gender for the MENA region at CARE International, Amira advocated for better legislations related to gender-based violence in the Region and contributed to the implementation of the CARE_ MENA advocacy strategy to address Gender Based Violence GBV (with a focus on child marriage).

Amira maintains deep connections with a variety of key international and national stakeholders, including governmental, national, international NGOs, and UN Agencies. She holds two Master’s degrees in international human rights law and development studies from the American University in Cairo.

Amira Hussein is an active member of the Women’s Rights movement in Egypt, and the Arab region. She believes in the importance of civil society organisations especially women led organisations to lead and advocate for a meaningful gender transformation in the region.
