Breastfeeding provides effective contraception for new mothers. However, with the introduction of other food into the infant's diet, the contraceptive protection of breastfeeding decreases. Mexico City is celebrating five years of the decriminalization of termination of pregnancy in the first trimester of gestation. Immediately after the landmark reform of its abortion law (in April 2007), the Mexico City Ministry of Health initiated the "Legal Interruption of Pregnancy" (ILE for its Spanish acronym) programme in its health facilities. In the past five years, close to 80,000 women have received safe ILE services, using the best available evidence-based technologies, and including comprehensive post-abortion care with contraceptive counselling, free of charge.

On the 30th of November 2012, a book describing the process of the implementation of ILE services was published, including contributions of Marieke van Dijk, one of the current RiH staff members. More information about the ILE program can be found here.

Across Europe men who have sex with men (MSM) represent one of the key groups affected by HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI). At present, MSM account for almost half of all syphilis cases reported in Europe – with some countries reporting almost 80% of all cases in this group. On-going outbreaks and rising trends among MSM suggest the need for reinforced prevention initiatives.

ResultsinHealth in collaboration with the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) of the Netherlands and the former Schorer conducted a literature review on HIV and STI prevention interventions targeted at MSM. The work was contracted by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The report of this joint research, STI and HIV prevention in men who have sex with men in Europe was published on 21 February 2013.
